December 1st, what many of us consider the official start of the off season, a time to lick the wounds and give the body a break. On February 1st, we'll come back rested and ready to crank on all cylinders! We don't quit running for two months, heck no, we just dial back, skipping days and keeping the intensity low. No long or hard workouts, no sweating the weekly mileage and no serious racing. A time for some fun races like the Holiday Hustle 5K on Saturday at 4:30 PM, races where we dress up, enjoy a romp with friends though the cool evening air and leave the watch at home. Naughty or nice, walker or runner, come breathe in the December night air and give back to others. A silly, hilly out and back course that will take in the neighborhood light displays and give you a chance to see the flashing gang ahead or behind you!

Winter, the real deal! Finally, some decent weather to test our resolve and earn true satisfaction for our super human efforts! Yee Ha! It feels good to get the dust off the YakTrax and put in some winter miles with no wimps in sight.
Yes, It's a busy time of year, but don't let the Holiday rush get you down and don't stress about your running, just getting out the door is all that is needed to call it a successful run, forget distance or pace, no torture necessary, just overdress and run short. Not to worry, we will soon we hit a new year with new goals and a more serious schedule, but for now, chill ... But only after that short, fun run!

I often bring up the importance of sharing the gift of running. That said, many of us may be just a bit too excited about our sport, especially while training for an event. (OK, what I mean is you might just share my problem!) We need to be sensitive to our non-running friends and family members who might not be excited to hear about our workouts, long runs, total weekly mileage, pace or race plans. The best way to share our joy is to let them see that that we are productive, fit, helpful and concerned... if they get the idea that our running contributes to that, the gift has been shared.

The recent Movie covering the 12 person, 198 mile Hood to Coast Relay, followed a team of non-runners who entered the event with almost no training. Each person ran (covered) about 18 miles by running (walking) 3 legs of about 6 miles each. They finished the event amazed and fulfilled by their accomplishment.
Ive often said you can put in the miles and do all the work before race day so that you can enjoy and savor the event, or you can enter the event under-trained and do all the work during the event. Both methods will give you a sense of satisfaction and personal fulfillment. (With the first, a much slower finish time than you were capable of and a miserable recovery period.)
The message here is that attempting something way out of your comfort zone and perhaps seemingly impossible, is often worth the risk. As the late running philosopher Dr. George Sheehan said, in a distance event we get down to bedrock, we find strength and courage we never knew we had, we give witness to a person we have never been before. In the race, we discover and form the self, perhaps our most important function, it is an adventure in self discovery! Whatever you are considering, take the leap, just do it!

Winter is a time to make sure we just get out the door consistantly, the runs don't have to be hard or long, just basic maintenance for the body and our sanity. Any winter racing should be fun, social events.

Winter is a time to learn a bit about our sport, write a training plan for ourselves and set some goals. Is this your year to set your goal to do a half marathon, marathon or triathlon? Daunting goals, but not when you have a plan in place and set yourself up for success. I joke that I am an obsessed runner and closet triathlete. Yes, my passion is the run, it's simplicity and get down to bedrock basics fulfill me like nothing else. The triathlon is a fun and challenging cross training diversion for me. Triathlon training helps my overall fitness level and makes me appreciate running all the more.
